Fifth Sunday in Easter - Love is like bread.....

Reflection for Easter 5 – Love is like bread….

“As I have loved you, you also should love one another.” John 13:34b

At this time, for many people - Covid fatigue, climate change worry, wars and conflicts overseas, work, family, health, money, media and federal election promises – all and more are taking their toll in various ways. And a week of constant grey skies (unusual for sunny sub-tropical Queensland) and downpour have added an extra edge of anxiety as we relive the flooding memories of two months ago.

It’s a no brainer that our natural resilience is down. And I find myself saying to God: ‘Yes, I know, I know! But I’m tired! Can I just pull the covers over my head and stay in bed until it all gets better? Or at least until the sun starts shining again?

There’s an old saying:

“Love is like bread, it has to be made fresh every day.”

So I get out of my bed, turn and make it, and remember the words of morning prayer said by many each and every day:

‘As we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you…’

So - risen Christ - refresh us and teach us again in this kitchen of life, how to make the bread of love fresh once more. Be with us as we mix and knead this precious and earthly gift of life, setting time aside to allow it to rest and prove in your warmth and peace, ready to bake it to nourish it for all in our hearts set on fire.

And may we return to our beds at the end of the day, weary but thankful for your love that has nourished us as well.

Blessings
